A Playful Practice

Come Back to Your Body

A playful, embodied movement practice combining hula hoop flow, yoga-inspired movement, breath, music, and mindful awareness. In this welcoming class the hoop is a companion to movement — a way to bring your attention out of the mind and into the body.

We begin by arriving through intention-setting, gentle breathwork, and a personalized tarot card. From there, yoga-inspired stretches and accessible movement prepare the body before we explore a creative flow with the hoop.

No previous hooping or yoga experience is needed. There is nothing to achieve and no right way to move — every movement can be adapted, and hoops are provided.

Hula Hoop Flow Guide

My hula hoop journey began with a simple gift from a friend — and I never put it down. Eleven years later, what started as a joyful way to dance has become one of the most transformative practices of my life. Through the combination of conscious movement, breath, and play, I discovered a way to reconnect with myself, release what no longer served me, and experience genuine joy. My hope is to create a welcoming space where people of every age and experience level can move freely, quiet the mind, and remember that healing can also be playful, creative, and deeply joyful.

A Note from Martha Graham

Dance is the hidden language of the soul.

Insight · Worth Knowing Anyway

Older Than You'd Think

The hoop in your hands has a much longer history than the 1958 toy craze that made it famous.

01

Ancient Play

Hoop play appears in Egyptian art dating back roughly 3,000 years, and hoop-based games have shown up independently across Greek, Roman, and Indigenous cultures long before it became a modern toy.

02

A Young Art Form

'Flow arts' as a named movement practice — combining hoop, staff, and object manipulation with dance — only coalesced in the last twenty-five years, largely out of festival culture.

03

Proprioception in Motion

Keeping a hoop moving demands constant micro-adjustment from the body's proprioceptive system — the same sense that lets you touch your nose with your eyes closed — which is part of why an hour of hooping can feel like a moving meditation.

Why Attend

Why Attend

Hula Hoop Flow can help you reconnect with your body and rediscover the joy of play.

Presence

Deepen body awareness and engage the core, hips, and supporting muscles while encouraging balance, coordination, and mobility.

Release

Release tension through rhythmic movement and quiet mental noise, inviting a genuine moving meditation.

Joy

Reawaken creativity and playfulness — come exactly as you are, and leave feeling grounded, energized, and more connected to yourself.

Special Instructions

Before youplay

A few small preparations — so your body is free to move and the hoop can do the rest.

I

Wear something you can move in

Fitted, stretchy clothing works best — loose, flowy fabric tends to catch on the hoop. Bare midriffs or a snug tank are ideal for on-body hooping, though full coverage is completely fine too.

II

No experience needed

Hoops are provided and no previous hooping or yoga experience is required. Come ready to be a beginner again — there's nothing to achieve here.

III

What to bring

Water, and if you have your own hoop and love it, feel free to bring it — otherwise one will be provided for you.

Testimonials

Voices from the Room

I haven't felt this playful in years. Holly makes it impossible to take yourself too seriously, which turned out to be exactly what I needed.
Casey L.
I came in convinced I'd be terrible at this and left laughing and sweaty and lighter. Such a joyful hour.
Brianna F.
The tarot card at the start was such a sweet touch — it set an intention that stuck with me the whole class.
