An Evening of Kirtan

Music, Mantra, and Shared Devotion

Join internationally acclaimed mantra artist and Bhakti Yoga teacher Ananda Das for an uplifting evening of music, mantra, and shared devotion at Sedonya, with an opening set by Stanzie Langtree.

Ananda brings ancient Sanskrit mantras to life through soulful music and a warm, welcoming energy — accompanied by harmonium, guitar, and rhythmic instrumentation, moving through music, silence, devotion, and the collective power of many voices becoming one.

This is not a performance to watch from a distance. It is an invitation to become part of the offering — to let the mind soften, the voice open, and the heart remember what words alone cannot express.

Insight · Worth Knowing Anyway

The Instrument Wasn't Always Indian

Kirtan's call-and-response format is ancient, but one of its signature instruments has a surprisingly recent, well-traveled history.

01

A Borrowed Harmonium

The harmonium — now central to kirtan — was actually invented in 19th-century Europe and arrived in India through colonial trade, where it was adopted so thoroughly it now feels inseparable from devotional music.

02

Bhakti's Long Arc

Kirtan grows out of the Bhakti movement, a wave of devotional practice that swept across India for over a thousand years, prizing direct emotional connection to the divine over ritual or scripture alone.

03

Chanting and the Vagus Nerve

Studies on chanting and group singing show measurable increases in vagal tone — the body's rest-and-digest response — which may explain why a room of strangers singing together can leave people feeling calmer than they arrived.

Special Instructions

Before yousing

A few small preparations — so you can settle in and let your voice open.

I

Arrive early for seating

This is a popular evening — please arrive 15–20 minutes before start to find a comfortable seat on the floor or a chair along the back.

II

What to wear

Comfortable clothing you're happy to sit or gently sway in for the evening. Cushions and chairs are available, but many prefer to sit on the floor.

III

Come ready to participate

This isn't a concert to watch — it's kirtan, call-and-response chanting. You don't need to sing well or know the mantras beforehand; you're invited to let your voice join in however feels natural.

Testimonials

Voices from the Room

I've never sung in public in my life and by the third song I was singing at the top of my lungs with strangers. Something about Ananda's energy just opens you up.
Diego F.
Stanzie's opening set was gorgeous and then Ananda took the whole room somewhere else entirely. I left buzzing.
Harper L.
This wasn't a concert, it was a communal experience. My chest felt open for days afterward.
