Candlelight Yin Yoga

Soften, Surrender, Remember

Step into the gentle stillness of Yin Yoga with Fran Brooks — physician, lifelong wellness enthusiast, and devoted yogini. This quiet, meditative practice reaches deep into the body's connective tissues.

Through long-held postures and steady breath, layers of tension melt away, the nervous system unwinds, and a deeper awareness emerges. Yin invites you to soften, surrender, and remember your natural state of balance and peace.

Beyond physical release, Yin is an inward journey — cultivating mindfulness, patience, and self-compassion, gently revealing the still, steady awareness that has been there all along.

Portrait of Fran Brooks

Fran Brooks

Physician & Yoga Teacher

Fran believes yoga is a path that extends far beyond the mat. As both a physician and spiritual seeker, she found yoga to be one of the most powerful forces shaping her life — helping her stay centered, resilient, and joyful.

A Note from Sarah Powers

Yin yoga works with the body to increase circulation in the joints and improve flexibility, while also calming and balancing the mind and body.

Insight · Worth Knowing Anyway

A Much Newer Practice Than It Feels

Yin's stillness makes it feel ancient, but as a named practice it's younger than you'd guess.

01

Invented in the 1970s

Yin Yoga as a distinct practice was developed in the West in the 1970s and 80s by martial artist Paulie Zink, later refined and popularized by Paul Grilley — it's a genuinely modern synthesis, not an unbroken ancient lineage.

02

Fascia, Not Muscle

Where most yoga targets muscle, Yin's long holds are aimed at connective tissue — fascia, ligaments, and joint capsules — which respond to sustained, gentle stress over minutes rather than the seconds a typical stretch allows.

03

Stillness Has a Nervous System Effect

Holding a pose for three to five minutes gives the parasympathetic nervous system enough time to actually downshift — most active stretching never lasts long enough to trigger that same shift.

Why Attend

Why Attend

A calm, nurturing space for deep release and renewal.

Release

Long-held postures create more ease, flexibility, and spaciousness — not just in the body, but in the mind.

Grounding

The slow pace and long holds calm the parasympathetic system, grounding you into presence and restoring emotional balance.

Reflection

An inward journey that cultivates mindfulness, patience, and self-compassion, revealing the steady awareness that has always been there.

Special Instructions

Before yousoften

A few small preparations — so your body can fully soften into each held posture.

I

Arrive early

Please arrive 10 minutes before start to settle onto your mat before the practice begins — Yin moves slowly, and a rushed entrance works against it.

II

What to wear

Soft, warm layers. Because postures are held for several minutes at a time with little movement, the body cools quickly — bring socks and a light sweater or shawl.

III

What to bring

Your own mat if you have one, plus any props you like to use — bolsters and blocks are available, but a rolled blanket works just as well for support under the knees or hips.

Testimonials

Voices from the Room

I'm usually restless in slow classes but Fran's guidance made the long holds feel completely different — restorative, not boring.
Claire D.
Fran's background as a physician really comes through in how she explains what's happening in the body. I trust her completely.
Mateo A.
By the last pose I was somewhere I hadn't been in months — totally still. I sleep so much better on Wednesday nights now.
